Why Are Home Insurance Rates Increasing in North Carolina?

Home insurance rates in North Carolina are changing, and we want to keep our clients informed about what’s happening and why.
📈 What’s Happening
  • As of June 1, 2025, the average statewide homeowner’s insurance premium increased by 7.5%.
  • Another 7.5% increase is scheduled for June 1, 2026.
  • Actual increases vary depending on where you live:
    • Coastal Areas: Higher increases due to hurricane risk (up to 16% in 2025, plus another 15.9% in 2026).
    • Inland Areas: More moderate increases, averaging around 7.5% in places like Durham and Wake Counties.
🌪️ Why Rates Are Rising
  1. Natural Disasters – North Carolina has seen costly hurricanes and storms, leading to higher claim payouts.
  2. Reinsurance Costs – Insurance companies themselves buy insurance (“reinsurance”). Those costs have gone up significantly nationwide, pushing premiums higher.
  3. Statewide Settlement – The approved increases are part of a negotiated settlement between the N.C. Rate Bureau and the N.C. Department of Insurance. This settlement actually lowered the industry’s original request for much larger increases.
🏡 What This Means for You
  • Even if you haven’t filed a claim, rates are rising across the state.
  • Your increase will depend on your location and coverage details.
  • Bundling policies, updating coverage, and exploring discounts may help offset some of these changes.
